With a buoyant construction market bricklayers are in demand across Australia, and can apply for visas allowing migration to Australia under the general skilled visa program using visa subclass 189, 190, or 489.
In common with all general skilled visa applications bricklayers must secure a positive migration skills assessment before they can progress a skilled visa application with the Department of Immigration.
If you have a passport from a nominated country you must obtain your migration skills assessment from a Registered Training Organisation that has been given the appropriate authority to assess the competencies of bricklayers.
Approved RTOs are:
- Australian Construction Training Services
- VETASSESS
- Victoria University
GM Skilled is pleased to lodge migration skills assessment applications for our bricklayer clients with any of these 3 RTOs.
Migration skills assessments for passport holders of nominated countries typically involve an initial paper based assessment of previous qualifications (if any) and work experience.
A practical assessment is then undertaken, which is usually done in the physical presence of an assessor from the RTO.
The outcome of a positive assessment by the RTO is a migration skills assessment approval letter, and an Australian qualification called an AQF Certificate III, which is a qualification that will be recognised by employers in Australia.
GM Skilled maintains a watching brief for our bricklayer clients, and communicates details of practical assessment dates to our clients as soon as they become known – spaces for practical assessments are limited.
Note: If you are a bricklayer who intends to move to Australia and to work in your present occupation GM Skilled recommends that you also check the requirements for licensing in the State or Territory in which you will live if your visa application is successful. The migration skills assessment process does not necessarily allow you to work once you have moved to Australia. If you instruct GM Skilled we will provide guidance on the licensing requirements for your occupation.
Bricklayers who do not have a passport from a nominated country should apply to Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) for their migration skills assessment.
To be eligible for a successful TRA migration skills assessment outcome bricklayers must provide evidence of:
- A qualification comparable to the relevant Australian qualification for the nominated occupation – which for bricklayers is an AQF Certificate III, and
- 3 years of full-time paid employment in the nominated occupation at the required skill level, and
- At least 12 months of paid employment in the nominated occupation in the three years immediately before applying to TRA.
It should be noted that TRA generally considers that skilled employment arises after a qualification has been issued that is recognised as comparable to the relevant Australian qualification.
GM Skilled brings together the knowledge and experience from Go Matilda Visas in the area of Australian visa strategy.
